How do I cut large-diameter gaskets?
26 January 2024Here are 3 main ways to cut with hollow punches BOEHM : with a hammer, with a mallet and with a press
Hollow punches cutting with a hammer
The hollow punches are mounted on a chuck and the material to cut is on a receiving board which does not damage the punches.(PLAR4). The cutting is done by stricking with a hammer on the hitting head.
The stricking tool is made of a chuck on which we straightly hit with a hammer:
- Cutting diameters from 2 to 10 mm: JLBM10 chuck
- Cutting diameters from 2 to 20 mm: JLBM20 chuck
- Cutting diameters from 2 to 30 mm: JLBM30PA handle
Or a chuck screwed onto a striking handle:
- Cutting diameters from 2 to 50 mm: Handle JLBM53PA and chuck JLBM50PA
- Cutting diameters from 2 to 60 mm: Handle JLBM53 PA and chuck JLBM60PA
The handle is a patented ergonomic tool that absorbs vibrations transmitted to the hand when the hammer strikes. Its high-resistance striking head ensures long tool life.
Assembly of the striking tool
1- THE HANDLE
Take the handle in hand.
2- THE CHUCK
Screw the chuck onto the handle. Secure with the set screw and hexagonal key supplied.
3- RETRACTABLE CENTERING PIN
If necessary, screw the retractable centring pin onto the chuck to center the cut-out in relation to a line.
4- THE 1ST HOLLOW PUNCH
Insert the smaller-diameter hollow punch on the appropriate chuck ramp and turn it clockwise until it is locked.
5- THE 2ND HOLLOW PUNCH
To cut rings or gaskets, attach the second larger hollow punch in the same way.
Hollow punches cutting with a mallet
The material is positioned on the hollow punch. The cut is carried out by striking the material around the cutting edge of the hollow punch with a wooden, copper, brass or plastic mallet. Caution: do not use a hammer in this configuration, which would deteriorate the hollow punch.
This method is mainly dedicated to 61 to 100 mm diameter hollow punches where hammer cutting is impossible. These hollow punches can be mounted on a JLBM100 chuck lying flat in order to allow the twinning of 2 diameters.
Hollow punches cutting with a press
The chuck is fixed on the moveable section of the press and the material to be cut must be on a receiving plate which doesn’t damage the hollow punch.(PLAG1).
Any type of press is compatible (manual, electric, pneumatic...etc.), as long as the movement is slow and the cutting support is suitable.

- Ref : JLBM30PRESSE for cutting diameters from 2 to 30 mm
- Ref : JLBM53PRESSE for cutting diameters from 2 to 100 mm
Some practical advices for using BOEHM tools
